Molly didn’t stay to hear any explanations. She stormed off, her heels clicking against the stone path, leaving Will and me standing in silence. I felt like my chest was caving in. The weight of her words hung heavily in the air.

“I trusted you.”

Will reached for me, but I took a step back. “No, Will. Don’t.” My voice was barely a whisper. “She didn’t deserve this.”

“She deserves the truth,” he argued, his jaw tightening. “We all do.”

I shook my head, tears spilling over. “The truth? The truth is we’ve both hurt someone who didn’t deserve to be caught in this mess. I don’t even know who I am anymore.”

He looked at me then, his eyes full of a raw, desperate kind of emotion that made my heart ache. “Emma, I can’t undo what happened. But I know what I feel for you is real.”

I wanted to believe him. God, I wanted to throw myself into his arms and let everything else disappear. But I couldn’t ignore the guilt gnawing at my soul.

“You need to figure things out with Molly,” I said, stepping further away. “And I need to figure out who I am without being someone’s second choice, Will.”

His face crumpled like I’d slapped him. “Second choice? You think this was easy for me? You think I haven’t been fighting this—fighting us—since the moment we met?”

The crack in his voice almost broke me, but I forced myself to stand firm. “It doesn’t matter how we feel, Will. It matters what we’ve done. And right now, I can’t be a part of this anymore.”

I turned and walked away, my heart shattering with every step. I could feel his gaze on my back, but he didn’t follow.

The days that followed were agonizing. Molly wouldn’t return my calls or texts. She unfriended me on everything, and I couldn’t blame her. The silence between us was deafening, and the loss of her friendship felt like losing a piece of myself.

Will tried to reach out a few times, but I ignored him. I couldn’t face him, not while I was still trying to piece myself back together. I spent my nights lying awake, replaying every moment in my head—the kiss, the confession, the look on Molly’s face.

Then, a week later, Molly showed up at my door.

I froze, staring at her through the peephole, unsure if I should even open it. But before I could decide, she knocked again, harder this time. “Emma, I know you’re in there. Open the damn door.”

Her voice wasn’t angry, just… tired. I swallowed the lump in my throat and opened the door.

Molly stood there, her arms crossed, looking at me with red-rimmed eyes. “I needed some time,” she said flatly. “But I couldn’t just… leave it like this.”

I stepped aside, letting her in. She walked past me and stood in the middle of my living room, her gaze darting around like she didn’t know where to start. Finally, she turned to me.

“I’m not going to pretend I’m okay with what happened,” she began, her voice shaking slightly. “But I need to know… did you ever even feel guilty? Or were you just waiting for me to leave so you could swoop in?”

Her words stung, but I knew I deserved them. “I felt guilty every second, Molly. I hated myself for it. But I… I let it happen anyway.”

She sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. “Will told me everything,” she said after a pause. “He said he’s been in love with you for a long time. Longer than I even want to think about.”

I didn’t know what to say. The silence stretched between us until she finally continued.

“I don’t think I can forgive you for this, Emma. At least, not right now. But I also can’t keep pretending that Will and I were happy. We weren’t. Maybe I was holding onto something that wasn’t even there anymore.”

“Molly, I—”

She held up a hand to stop me. “I’m not saying this to make you feel better. I’m saying it because I don’t want us to keep lying—to each other or to ourselves.”

I nodded, tears streaming down my face. “I’m so sorry, Molly. For everything.”

She gave me a sad smile. “Yeah. Me too.”

And with that, she walked out, leaving me standing in the middle of my apartment, feeling both relieved and utterly shattered.

Will and I haven’t spoken since. I don’t know what the future holds for us—if there even is a future. All I know is that love isn’t always beautiful. Sometimes, it’s messy and complicated and leaves scars you’ll carry forever.

But maybe, just maybe, those scars will teach us something.
